Rethinking Education: Educating Hearts and Minds - Daniel Goleman with George Lucas
Reviews / Comments
""I found the combination of George Lucas and Daniel Goleman a valuable one that gave unique perspectives that were delivered in harmony but illuminated different points of value to each of the dynamics of education that must be addressed. Daniel Goleman is largely hosting this discussion that is usually dominated by George and his innovative ideas. The audio was very easy to listen to. Both are great orators addressing contemporary challenges in teaching 21st Century students. The fundamental approaches to styles and purpose for educating children while provoking critical thinking in the twenty-first century were practical. Most of the information was presented in a relaxed conversational style. I loved the genuine empathy and emphasis that George placed on teachers becoming more humane with students, while suggesting a balance was needed when fun was at time placed at too high of a priority over effective learning. His challenge for teachers to dare to be more like mentors was refreshing. While listening to “The communication arts,” the importance of communication being developed through the integration of graphics, music, cinema, math and words was intriguing. I could instantly imagine gaining the interest of students while using a tool belt of all of these communication instruments to inspire a passion to communicate their stories. When making a change from the bottom up you need leveraged support to advocate the feasibility of your innovation. George Lucas introduces edutopia.com as a resource to go to and find examples of some of the ideas being discussed. During the “New skills for teachers” chapter it was great to hear about using SEL models to train teachers to know the student beyond their name or grade. Here, George highlights the need to train teachers to relate to and explore the student’s home life, and personal life. Whereas Daniel Goleman is renowned for his writing of Emotion Intelligence, It was great to hear George placing emphasis and practical application for EI while proving your point of view in an argument. George expounded on the value of teaching how to let go of a position or belief when it has been proven to be erroneous. I wonder if our political leaders had been trained with this model if we would have the current models of debating that have been largely non-productive. I found this to be a valuable tool in developing innovative strategies for education. "~"
